‘Harvey Beaks’ Composer Ego Plum: Modern Animation Deserves Orchestral Music

What is your advice for creators who want to use live orchestras for their cartoons?

Ego Plum: Push for it. Do whatever you can! It’s a language that’s worth preserving and bringing back to modern animation. It elevates the art form. Nickelodeon was gracious enough to make 40-60 musicians happen for Harvey Beaks and I would love to hear that on other shows, besides the Seth MacFarlane properties and The Simpsons. There are tons of talented guys out there more capable than me who deserve this opportunity, but more importantly — cartoons themselves deserve it

Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion Debuts New Music by Ego Plum for Expanded Outdoor Queue

With the queue’s reopening, new music by award-winning composer Ego Plum has debuted. Over 40 minutes of new music can be heard while waiting to ride the popular attraction. Plum is an Emmy-nominated composer who is celebrated for his work on SpongeBob SquarePants and The Cuphead Show. He’s also a lifelong Disneyland fan and his recent contributions to the Haunted Mansion fulfill one of his creative dreams.

“I take influences from a lot of different places. As lofty as it sounds, I’m striving for timeless melodies that can exist for 80 or 100 years – you aim that high, and then try to land somewhere in the middle. As crazy as it sounds, something like ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’ or ‘Three Blind Mice’ is more important to me than Duke Ellington because those melodies don’t really have that much to do with jazz.”
